WHAT HAVE YOU L1RND TODAY?…
October 22nd, 2008…or, how to misspell your way into the New World!
Here at Varied Needs User, we try to keep up with the times, so I’ve been with Twitter since January 08, and it’s opened my eyes to Social Networking, and the way people just seem to love interacting on the Net.
I’ve L1RND a lot from following the links, and avoiding at least some of the obvious spamming. But I’ve wasted a hell of a lot of time too – it can be like a soap opera on steroids! It’s been great thus far, because I’ve been able hook up with all sorts of folks from all around the world – an itinerary for the future?
It got me thinking that there must be a way of refining this interaction, focussing it on a niche or niches, or (at least slightly more) specific areas of interest! Then along came FriendFeed. It gained endorsement from Ed Dale early on – which is always a good thing, in my book – and it is more flexible – Twitter was never intended to be an Instant Messaging site, but that seems to be what it has developed into.
It just ends up being very difficult to follow conversations – you can follow one side by checking somebody in particular and reviewing their posts, but it still only gives you part of the picture – you end up having to flit all over the place to see who asked what that led to a post that hooked you!
My real aim has been to take Twitter’s original question – “What are you doing?” – and morph it to “What have you learned today?” The objective was to help anyone, and everyone, to get on in the world, and that was before the events of September, which now seem to make the question even more pertinent!
The misspelling is deliberate, to unashamedly draw attention, and to allow me, at least in the UK, to gain publicity for my intentions, because it’s a Car Registration Number too!
Back to the purpose: sharing what we have L1RND in our daily experiences – there are a lot of lessons going on all the time, they’re usually called Life! To help anyone struggling with issues, or wanting to broadcast successes (and how they achieved them), we need an avenue that is not purely a cold, hard, definition, like you get at Wiki. That avenue needs to be interactive, lively, and searchable, so anyone joining in can catch up (sorry, sounds like a soap opera again!)
That avenue is FriendFeed – http://www.friendfeed.com – check it out if you can – there’s a new Room called “What Have You L1RND Today”. Please feel free to contribute anything that you can.
It is now proven that if we carry on learning throughout life, we help to fight off dementia – everyone over 50 should know about Web 2.0 and the power of Social Networking because you owe it to yourself – the Internet can keep you alive!
